LEGO Technic 42114 6×6 Volvo Articulated Hauler review, automatic transmission upgrade & custom controls

Here is my detailed building review of the LEGO Technic 42114 6×6 Volvo Articulated Hauler. Please note that the Control+ profile used in the video is still a beta version, I’ll do a separate presentation of the functions once the update is released officialy:

Since the automatic transmission in the Control+ app is not fully automatic, I decided to create a custom control sequence in the Powered Up app. It is still work in progress and not published yet, as the Technic Angular Motor in the set does not work yet with the app. I used a similar motor from the Spike Prime set for the test.

Since the Control+ app with the profile for 42114 is not released yet and the Powered Up app cannot be used for steering, the best option is to use the BrickController 2 app with a gamepad that is compatible with your smart device. Here is the setup I created for control. There are 2 separate profiles, the first is for the RC gearbox calibration.

There’s a single controller needed to fine-tune the L motor’s zero position that controls the gearbox. I assigned it to the D-pad’s X axis:

The channel type is set to Stepper Motor, and the stepper angle is 5 degrees. You can see in the video how it is used to set the initial position.

The second profile created is for the control of the set:

The following controllers are used:

Throttle is assigned to the left joystick, it had to inverted for the proper forward/backward motion:

Gear shifting is assigned to Button X and Button B, channel type should be StepperMotor again. Each button press rotates the gear selector axle by 90 degrees.

Steering is assigned to the right joystick, you need to run the calibration for the steering and it is advised to limit the Servo range as well:
